Lexical Set in RELTmax

Lexical Set:
Vocabulary or a set of words to be taught based on the unit/topic.

Choosing lexical sets for your unit/topic is very important as it helps steering the direction of your lessons. Lexical sets are build up progressively from word level, to phrase level, to sentence level, to whole-text level.

For pupils with low proficiency, teachers may stick to the basic lexical sets while those with high proficiency may be introduced to more words.

The diagram above shows how the main lexical set is supported by other lexical sets.

How to choose lexical sets for your unit:

1. The main lexical set usually:
  • reflects the title of the unit, e.g. Unit 10 Year 3: A Ride in the Safari - cheetah, lion, giraffe, crocodile, rhinoceros, ostrich
  • consists of words that are used repeatedly throughout the unit,
  • comes from noun word group
  • consists of 3-10 words depending on pupils' proficiency
2. The supporting lexical sets consist of:
  • nouns / verbs / adjectives / pronouns / prepositions (grammar words)
  • words that help describe the main lexical set
  • words that will be used to create a complete sentence based on the main lexical set.
